Historical background

SAVOY - DUCHY OF SAVOY - PHILIBERT I THE HUNTER

(1472-1482)

Philibert I was born on August 7, 1465 from the union of Amédée IX and Yolande de France, sister of King Louis XI of France. He succeeded, under the guardianship of his mother, to his father who died in 1472. Charles the Bold had his mother imprisoned in the Château de Rouvre and he was placed under the guardianship of the King of France. He married, in 1474, Blanche Marie Sforza. Yolande of France was freed and regained guardianship of the duchy before dying in 1478. Philibert reigned alone from that year. Barely sixteen years old, he died on April 22, 1482 in Lyon where he had gone to meet the King of France..
