Historical background

SAVOY - Duchy of Savoy - Charles I

(1482-1490)

Charles I was born in 1468 in Carignan union of Amadeus IX and Yolande de France. In 1482 he succeeded his brother Philibert Ier. In 1485 he married Blanche of Montferrat (1472-1519) daughter of William Palaeologus of Montferrat and Elizabeth Sforza, whom he had several children, including the future Duke Jean-Charles-Amédée. It is the first Duke of Savoy (from 1487) to bear the title of king of Cyprus that he obtained by inheritance from his aunt Charlotte of Cyprus. Return Amboise where he met Charles VIII, he died March 13, 1490, perhaps poisoned by the Marquis of Monferrato and is buried in Pinerolo.
