Historical background

SASANIAN KINGDOM - YAZDGARD III

(632-651)

After the death of Khusro II (Chosroes) in 628, political instability prevented the election of a new monarch. All suitors were quickly eliminated. Yazdgard III was crowned in 632 after being extracted from his mountainous retreat. He reigned nineteen years, but from 636, the standard of Kavadh, symbol of the power of the Sassanids fell into the hands of the Arabs. After Hihavand's defeat in 642, Yazdgard III was hunted down. He found refuge in Merv where he was assassinated in 651.
