Commentary

Type monétaire particulièrement rare et spectaculaire avec la représentation de la tête de saint Martin sur une monnaie double de l’inscription CAPVT [S]CI MARTINVS. La tête est mieux formé que sur l’exemplaire proposé dans à la vente par CGB sous le n° bfe_486505 annonçant les séries dites “bléso-chartraines”. Le corps de Saint-Martin avait en effet été enterré dans la crypte de Saint-Martin de Tours et donna lieu à un important pélerinage. Des très rares deniers avec la tête à droite de saint Martin et l’inscription SM sont également connus.
Particularly rare and spectacular monetary type with the representation of the head of Saint Martin on a coin doubled with the inscription CAPVT [S]CI MARTINVS. The head is better formed than on the copy offered for sale by CGB under the n° bfe_486505 announcing the so-called “bléso-chartraines” series. The body of Saint Martin had in fact been buried in the crypt of Saint Martin of Tours and gave rise to a large pilgrimage. Very rare denarii with the head to the right of Saint Martin and the inscription SM are also known.
