Historical background

SAGIENS (Area of Sées, Orne)

(3rd - 1st century BC)

The Sagii or Sagians were a Celtic tribe, vassal at the origin of that of the Ésuviens, with the capital Sées in the current department of Orne. Its territory was included between that of the tribe of the Aesuvians and the Lexovians in the north, the Unelles in the west, the Aulerci Eburovices in the east and the Aulerci Cenomans in the south.. It substantially corresponded to the limits of the former diocese of Sées. Source wikipedia. Around 500 BC. VS. , the Celts settled in the future territory of Orne. They divide the region based on topographic and hydrographic realities. Three peoples occupied the area before the Roman conquest: the Aulerci-Diablintes (in Perche), the Essui (around Essai, their capital) and the Sagii (in the future diocese of Sées). The Aulerci are the first to rise against the Romans invading Gaul. They attack Caesar's lieutenant, Titurius Sabinus, under the leadership of their leader Viridovix, then play an active role during the general insurrection of the Gauls led by Vercingetorix. The Essui, themselves, make a direct alliance with the invader, which allows them to occupy a privileged position under Roman domination.. .
