Commentary

This is a test strike on the Thonnelier press. Developed by mechanical engineer Nicolas Thonnelier, the press was driven by steam, with pressure exerted by a lever replacing the mechanical force of the balance. Striking at a rate of fifty coins per minute, it was installed in 1845 in the Paris Mint's manufacturing workshops and gradually replaced balance or screw striking. It would also be adopted by the St. Petersburg mint.
