Commentary

Institué en 2006, le titre de « Ville de la gloire militaire » est attribué aux villes russes dont les habitants ont fait preuve de courage et d’héroïsme particuliers pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale.
Orel ou Oriol (ville décorée le 27 avril 2007) est occupée par les armées allemandes le 3 octobre 1941. Située au nord du saillant de Koursk, de cette ville est déclanchée l’offensive allemande nord de l’opération Zitadelle . Du 5 juillet au 23 août 1943, l’offensive allemande est contenue puis repoussée par les russes malgré des pertes effroyables. Totalement détruite, la ville est libérée le 5 août 1943 .
Established in 2006, the title of \\\"City of Military Glory\\\" is awarded to Russian cities whose inhabitants demonstrated particular courage and heroism during the Second World War. Orel or Oriol (a city decorated on April 27, 2007) was occupied by the German armies on October 3, 1941. Located north of the Kursk salient, this city was the launching point for the German northern offensive of Operation Zitadelle. From July 5 to August 23, 1943, the German offensive was contained and then repelled by the Russians despite terrible losses. Totally destroyed, the city was liberated on August 5, 1943.
