Commentary

George IV (12/09/1762-25/06/1830) was the eldest son of George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg. After a depraved youth, he became Regent in 1810 when his father's dementia became too severe. He married Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821). Their only daughter Charlotte (1796-1817) married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, the future King of the Belgians. His brothers William IV and Ernest Augustus were King of England and King of Hanover respectively. His niece Victoria became Queen. George IV was an ultra-conservative, a sworn enemy of Napoleon and a traitor to his word given to the Emperor, whom he allowed to be deported to the island of Saint Helena. He relied on Wellington to govern.
