RHODES - GRANDS MAÎTRES DE L'ORDRE DE L'HÔPITAL ET DE SAINT-JEAN DE JÉRUSALEM - PHILIBERT OF NAILLAC

(1396-1421)

Following the defeat of the Christian troops in Nicopolis (1396), Naillac fled with King Sigismond to the Black Sea and then Constantinople. Elected grand master, he joined Rhodes in January 1397. He broke away from the conflicts between Avignon and Rome during the "great schism of the West" and worked to fight against the Ottomans. In 1399, he helped free Constantinople alongside Marshal de Boucicaut. In 1403, Naillac accompanied Boucicaut on an expedition against the Egyptian Mamluks. He fortified Rhodes and in particular the port. Naillac left Rhodes in 1409 for a long journey in Europe. He did not return to Rhodes until 1420 where he died the following year.
