Commentary

Seems to have the same obverse as the copy reproduced in Mr. Crawford's work (RRC. pl. 12, no. 3) who only recorded 17 examples of this type in Paris. We are certainly in the presence of an intermediate standard for this sextans

Historical background

ROMAN REPUBLIC - ANONYMOUS

(211-202 BC)

In 211 AC, the young Publius Cornelius Scipio was appointed proconsul in Spain and attempted to prevent Hasdrubal from joining Hannibal in Italy. He seizes Cartagena but fails to prevent Hasdrubal from crossing into Italy. Scipio brings war to Africa in 204 AC, forcing the Carthaginians to recall Hannibal. The Carthaginians were finally defeated at Zama in 202 AC and asked for peace the following year. That same year, Publius Cornelius Scipio received the nickname of Scipio "the African".
