After the occupation of Sardinia and Corsica in 238 AC by the Romans, the Carthaginians seized Spain, led by Hamilcar, the father of H annibal. Hamilcar died in battle in 228 AC and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Hasdrubal. A treaty was signed the same year between the Romans and the Carthaginians. He made the Ebro the border of the Carthaginian possessions and guaranteed the neutrality of Saguntum, an ally of Rome..
