Historical background

FEDERATIVE REPUBLIC OF CAUCASUS

(1917-1919)

During the Revolution of February 1917, the declaration of rights led to the creation of a Congress of the North Caucasus which quickly gave itself a provisional constitution. In May 1918, the Caucasus declared its independence from the Russian Federation and was recognized by Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey. This republic had only an ephemeral existence and was overthrown by the tsarist general Denikin in 1919. In 1920, the Red Army will be welcomed there as a liberator.
