Pour sa sixième pièce de 2 Euro commémorative, la République de Saint-Marin a choisi d’illustrer l’année européenne de la créativité et de l’innovation déclarée en 2009 par le Parlement et le Conseil européen. Ce thème a été choisi par l’Union Européenne afin de promouvoir les capacités de créativité et d'innovation à travers les systèmes éducatifs et la formation continue, l'un des objectifs de long terme de l'UE étant de faire de l'Europe l'économie la plus performante au monde d'ici à 2020

For its sixth commemorative 2 Euro coin, the Republic of San Marino has chosen to illustrate the European Year of Creativity and Innovation declared in 2009 by the European Parliament and Council. This theme was chosen by the European Union to promote creativity and innovation capacities through education systems and lifelong learning, one of the EU's long-term objectives being to make Europe the most efficient economy in the world by 2020.

SAN MARINO

(13th century - nowadays)

The small republic of San Marino, south of Rimini, has been free since the 13th century. In the 15th century, it gave itself a Grand Council of sixty members recruited from the nobility and the bourgeoisie. In the 19th century it was a bastion for revolutionaries and it placed itself under the protection of the new Italian kingdom from 1862, which respected its independence. The members of the Grand Council are elected for four years by universal suffrage (introduced in 1909); two of them exercise executive power as captains-regent for six months.
