Commentary

Historical background

QUENTOVIC (WICVS IN PONTIO)

(7th century)

Jean Lafaurie, in his article in the Revue Numismatique of 1996, takes stock of knowledge on this coinage of Wicus. As early as the 17th century, Quentovic, the Roman port located at the mouth of the Canche, was proposed. In the 19th century, "a disappeared place near Etaples" (Pas-de-Calais), was proposed, while this town is located in the Boulonnais on the right bank of the mouth of the river. Wicus in Pontio is however located in Ponthieu. The oldest mention of Quentovic dates back to 720. One hundred and twenty-two coins have been listed by J. Lafaurie.
