PROVISIONAL GOVERNEMENT OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC - MOROCCO UNDER FRENCH PROTECTORATE

Following the French defeat in 1940, Sultan Mohammed V received from President Roosevelt the promise of independence. A nationalist party, the Istiqlal, is created. Riots were repressed by France in 1944. Morocco entered the French Union in 1946. In 1953, Mohammed V was deported to Corsica and then to Madagascar while terrorism bloodied the country. The Faure government initiated discussions in 1955 which led to the triumphant return of Mohammed V and independence on March 2, 1956..
