Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type de monnayage sur un flan parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Portrait magnifique. Revers de toute beauté où tous les détails sont visibles. Magnifique patine grise avec des reflets dorés

Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Marcus Aurelius Probus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Marc Aurèle Probus pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié debout de face, la tête de face dans un quadrige écartelé, levant la main droite et tenant un globe et un fouet de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto”, (Au Soleil Invincible).
Commentary
Avec l’intégralité de son argenture superficielle. Rubans de type 1. Manteau consulaire richement ornementé décoré avec une couronne sur le plastron et par un personnage sur l’épaule du vêtement, rappelant peut être le revers avec Sol dans son quadrige. Ce type semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laisse supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la première fois que nous le proposons à la vente pour l’atelier de Rome avec la tête de Sol de face.

This type seems much rarer than general works suggest. This is the first time we offer it for sale for the Rome workshop with Sol's head facing forward

Historical background
PROBUS

Probus was born on August 19, 232 in Sirmium. He led a brilliant military career during the reigns between Valerian I and Tacitus. Commander of the army of the East on the death of Tacitus, he was immediately proclaimed emperor and easily triumphed over Florian, who was assassinated. The situation is serious. The Rhine-Danubian limes gave way under the pressure of the Germanic invasions. Probus restores peace in Gaul, in Germania then in Rhaetia where he inflicts a severe defeat on the Germanic peoples, in Thrace where he crushes the Sarmatians and the Scythians, in Asia Minor which he cleans of looters and Pamphylian pirates, finally in Africa where he ends the incursions of the Blemmyes. In 280, he signed peace with Vahram II, Sassanid monarch. He must face the usurpations of Saturnin, Bonose and Proculus. Probus, having triumphed over all his adversaries, returned to Rome in 281 and celebrated his victories. Before preparing a new expedition against the Sassanids, he fell under the blows of his own soldiers at Sirmium in 282.
