Commentary

14th circulating 2.50 Euro coin from Portugal since 2008. Circulating commemorative coin from the UNESCO World Heritage series. The wine-growing landscape of Pico Island has been listed by UNESCO since 2004. The volcanic island of Pico, the second largest in the Azores archipelago, has been a wine-growing area since the 15th century. The landscape was shaped by humans to practice viticulture in a long network of stone walls, running parallel to the coast and up towards the interior of the island. These stone walls protect thousands of small rectangular enclosures (currais), attached to each other, from the wind and sea water.
