Historical background

BRIDGE - AMISOS

(Second - first century BC)

Placed on the Black Sea between Sinope and Pharnace, Amisus was founded in the sixth century BC by the Phoenicians and the Milesians. In the middle of the next century, populated by Athenian colonists, it was renamed Peiraeus (Piraeus). Datames seized Amisus in 372 BC, the city became dependent on Persian and an oligarchy was established. It was Alexander the Great, who liberated the city and returned his democratic status. His coinage lasted until the first century BC, experiencing a significant expansion during the reign of Mithridates VI of Pontus (120-63 AC)..
