Historical background

POMPEIA

(54 BC)

Quintus Pompeius Rufus is the son of Cornelia, herself daughter of Sylla. He is also the grandson of Quintus Pompeius Rufus, consul with Sylla in 88 BC. Pompeius Rufus is a fervent supporter of Pompey whom he follows to Greece. Quintus Pompeius Rufus is tribune of the plebs in 52 BC (R. Syme, p. 558 note 16). He takes the side of Pompey and participates in the elimination of Milon, assassin of Clodius. At the end of his magistracy, accused of having violated the law "of vi", he was condemned and exiled. He died in Bauli in Campania. His son Cnæus Pompeius will be consul suffect in 31 BC..
