Commentary

This single-sided obol seems to have been struck using a single die on a solid support, an anvil for example, as indicated by M. Dhénin and P. Schiesser (cf. RN. 2007, pages 294-295)

Historical background

POITOU - METALUS VICUS - MELLE (Deux-Sevres)

(late 7th - 8th centuries)

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
