Commentary


Cette obole uniface semble bien avoir été frappée à l'aide d'un seul coin sur un support solide, une enclume par exemple, comme l'indiquent M. Dhénin et P. Schiesser (cf. RN. 2007, pages 294-295). Ce type monétaire présente une légende corrompue, mais pourrait se rattacher aux productions melloises, ou plus largement aux proches ateliers du grand Ouest.

The Melle workshop, in the south-east of Deux-Sèvres, was important in the Carolingian period and seems to have been in operation from the Merovingian period. The silver-lead mines are still accessible and can be visited by a wide public.
