Historical background

POITOU - COUNTY OF POITOU - PHILIPPE DE FRANCE

(1311-1317)

Philippe de France is the second son of the King of France Philippe IV le Bel (1285-1314) and Jeanne, daughter of the King of Navarre. In 1311 his father gave him the county of Poitou. On June 5, 1316, Louis X, his elder brother and King of France, died, leaving Queen Clemence of Hungary pregnant. Philip was declared regent of the kingdom until the coronation of his eldest brother's posthumous son. Jean, posthumous son of Louis lived only five days, leaving vacant the throne of France. On January 9, 1317, Philippe was hastily crowned under the name of Philippe V called "the Long". Poitou was then united to the crown of France.
