Agréable denier, sur un flan un peu court mais avec une bonne partie des légendes. Patine grise, un peu plus sombre par endroits

Commentary


Ce denier semble correspondre aux n° 148 et 149 de Bais ; attribués à Poitiers, pour le monétaire BETTONE.
Les deniers B. 2869 et 3632, eux aussi avec un swastika, sont attribués à Meaux et à Poitiers. Le n° 209 de Bais a lui aussi un swastika mais il est attribué à PORTO VETERI (Port-Saint-Père 44).

(late 7th - early 8th century)

Many denarii from Poitiers have a radiated head, as in Orleans. These denarii were struck at the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century, since they are found in the treasury of Plassac (Gironde) hidden around 710-730. The Merovingian coinage of the Poitevine region is quite diversified, with triens and a wide variety of denarii. The proximity of the silver mines of Melle is certainly no coincidence.
