Commentary

Historical background

Fishmongers

According to Tallemant, a charge of fish salesman cost fifty thousand pounds. From the 13th century, the statutes of the fishmongers note that the arrivals of the fresh tide were made regularly and in abundance. Etienne Boileau and the provosts of Paris, his successors, tirelessly watched over the provisioning of the city and the proper organization of this very important and very difficult trade. The acts are very numerous, in the various forms of letters patent, edicts, regulations, ordinances, sentences and judgments, cries and announcements of all kinds..
