Commentary

L'écu de Chanteau est parlant : trois poissons et la grappe qui produit le vin dont on les arrose. Sous Louis XIII, un marchand qui s'arroge le droit de prendre un écusson ou de se le faire concéder est chose rare. D'après Tallemant, une charge de préposé à la vente des poissons se payait 50.000 livres.

According to Tallemant, a charge of fish salesman cost fifty thousand pounds.
