Commentary

This filled drachma seemed, when it appeared in COINS XV, to be completely new... It actually seems to correspond to DT. 3352 constituting Class V “profile with curly hair and triskelion”, from series 1034 “horsemen with shields” attributed to the Bituriges-Cubi. This DT. 3352 is indicated to be the example that illustrates the Nash 1978, plate 4, no. 97 while no. 97 actually corresponds to DT. 3350. DT. 3352 was indeed an original variety, the first example of which was reported to be our coin, when it appeared in COINS XV!

Historical background

PICTONES / CENTER WEST, Unspecified

(1st century BC)

Several types traditionally given to the Pictons see their attribution questioned for a more general geographical area such as Center-West or Great-West of Gaul. Some also propose an attribution to a military workshop, perhaps linked to the Aedui... We must not imagine or dream of the Gallic, or even Celtic, economic space as closed. coins prove us wrong every day.
