Exemplaire sur un petit flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés. Galère bien venue au droit avec la date bien visible. Joli revers. Belle patine de collection ancienn avec des reflets dorés

Obverse description : Galère de guerre voguant à gauche avec une série de rames, ornée d'une rangée de boucliers (treize) ; à la poupe, un étendard (aplustre) ; au-dessous double ligne en zigzag pour figurer les flots ; grènetis circulaire cordonné.

Reverse legend : LÉGENDE PHÉNICIENNE “90”.
Reverse description : Bige au pas à gauche conduit par un aurige, tenant les rênes ; derrière une divinité barbue (ou le Grand Roi), coiffée de la cidaris et vêtue de la candys, levant la main droite ; grènetis circulaire cordonné.
Commentary
Au revers, les deux lettres araméennes sont les initiales du roi (Abastoret). Notre exemplaire est frappé sur un étalon phénicien allégé donc après la réforme de 372 avant J.-C..
Historical background
PHOENICIA - SIDON
(5th - 4th centuries BC)
Sidon was with Tire one of the main ports of the Phoenician coast, essentially a military port. Sidon was one of the oldest cities in Phenicia. The city was famous for the commercial exploitation of purple (murex). Its coinage seems to have begun in the second half of the 5th century BC and lasted until the Macedonian conquest in 332 BC. The city submitted to the conqueror without a fight, unlike its neighbor, Tyr who resisted for seven months. The new coinage of Sidon began in 112-111 BC Pompey maintained the status of a free city, later confirmed by Marc Antoine. Autonomous coinage ceased in 30/29 BC.
