Commentary

Of the 37 examples identified, six come from the Dunes treasure and fifteen are kept at the National Library. The other provenances are Perpignan and Saint-Étienne-de-la-Lande (Dordogne). This example is by far the most beautiful we have offered for sale and it even surpasses the type coins illustrated in the Savès! Probably the most beautiful known example

Historical background

GALLIA - SOUTH WESTERN GAUL - PETROCORII (Area of Perigueux)

(1st century BC)

The Pétrocoriens or Pétrocores whose territory extended between the Dordogne and the Vézère on the current department of the Dordogne, (the former Périgord) had Périgueux for capital. They were part of Celtic Gaul and will then be attached to Aquitaine. They appear late as the Nitiobroges at the time of the final phase of the Gallic Wars. They provided a contingent of 5,000 men to the relief army. Strabo pointed out that the Petrocores were very good metallurgists and worked iron. Sources: Caesar (BG. VII, 75, Strabo IV, 2, 2).
