Il s’agit de la première utilisation de l’iconographie du soleil républicain sur les monnaies et exonumia péruviennes. José de San Martín était un général argentin qui mena le mouvement d’indépendance de l’Argentine, du Chili et du Pérou contre l’Espagne. Il participa à de nombreuses batailles, ce qui le conduisit finalement à attaquer Lima, place forte espagnole. Il prit partiellement le contrôle de la ville le 12 juillet 1821. San Martin fut déclaré protecteur du Pérou et une déclaration d'indépendance fut publiée le 28 juillet 1821.

José de San Martín was an Argentine general who led the independence movement of Argentina, Chile, and Peru against Spain. He participated in numerous battles, which ultimately led him to attack Lima, a Spanish stronghold. He partially captured the city on July 12, 1821. San Martín was declared protector of Peru, and a declaration of independence was issued on July 28, 1821.
