SPANISH NETHERLANDS - Duchy of Brabant - CHARLES V SAYS CHARLES QUINT
Said Charles V Charles V was born in Ghent February 25, 1500 to the union of the Archduke Philip the Handsome and Joanna the Mad. Father's side, he was the grand-son of Maximilian I of Habsburg and the maternal side, grand-son of the Catholic Kings, Ferdinand and Isabella. He became ruler of the Netherlands to the death of his father in 1506, when he was only 6 years. A period of regency was exercised by his aunt Margaret of Austria until his emancipation to the States General January 5, 1515. January 23, 1516, his maternal grandfather died and he ascended the throne of Spain under the name of Charles I.. After the death of Maximilian I, Charles was elected Holy Roman Emperor June 28, 1519, under the name of Charles V. The election was originally a long conflict that opposed the king of France Francis. Charles V abdicated October 25, 1555 of its possessions in the Netherlands and 16 January 1556 of its Spanish possessions. He died September 21, 1558 in the monastery of San Yuste Jeromino.
