Historical background

SPANISH NETHERLANDS - DUCHY OF BRABANT - CHARLES III OF HABSBOURG

(07/26/1678 - 04/17/1711)

Charles VI of the Holy Roman Empire, also known as Charles III of Habsburg (1685-170) was the son of Leopold I and the brother of Emperor Joseph I. As Archduke of Austria, he became Duke of Brabant in 1706. In 1711, he succeeded his brother and was crowned Emperor of the Holy Empire. In 1714, at the end of the War of Spanish Succession, the Netherlands were attached to the Habsburgs of Austria. We then speak of the Austrian Netherlands.
