Historical background

PAPAL STATES - INNOCENT IV

(25/06/1243-07/12/1254)

Of Genoese origin, Sinibald Fieschi, Count of Baragna, was elected pope on June 25, 1243 and was consecrated on June 28 under the name of Innocent IV. He tries to obtain from the Emperor Frederick the release of prisoner bishops. In 1245, during the 1st Council of Lyon, he had Frederick excommunicated and deposed. Henry is elected "King of the Romans". Under his pontificate, the Inquisition was established in the south of France and the cardinals were given their red hats, the first presentation of which took place in Cluny in the presence of Louis IX. He died on December 7, 1254.
