Commentary

Feuardent classifies this token in the French Hainaut because of the subject, but the more logical place for this issue would be in the series of the Ordinary of the Wars. The rain of gold falling on Dunkirk symbolizes the five million pounds that France paid to Charles II of England to retake possession of the city. Louis XIV entered the city on December 2, 1662.

Historical background

ORDINAIRE DES GUERRES (WAR ADMINISTRATION)

The Ordinary of Wars is the administration that manages the costs and expenses incurred by the ordinary use of the armed forces. It is different from the Extraordinary of wars which only comes into use for specific campaigns.
