Commentary

There is no doubt, from the bust of Louis XVI, that this token is a later strike. However, it seems very contemporary and could have been struck for the Ordinary, in the absence of the creation of a reverse die under Louis XVI.

Historical background

ORDINAIRE DES GUERRES (WAR ADMINISTRATION)

The Ordinary of Wars is the administration that manages the costs and expenses incurred by the ordinary use of the armed forces. It is different from the Extraordinary of wars which only comes into use for specific campaigns.
