Commentary

He was reconciled shortly after with the King through his wife Louise d'Amboise. He obtained from Henry IV the baton of Marshal of France in 1594 and the government of Cambrai. But the Cambraisiens, dissatisfied with their Governor, surrendered their city to the Spanish and besieged Balagny in the citadel. His wife revealed heroic courage and proved herself worthy of the title her husband bore. He had to surrender, without glory, on October 9, 1595. After the death of Renée de Clermont d'Amboise, he married Diane d'Estrées, sister of Gabrielle, on February 17, 1599.
