Historical background

NETHERLANDS - TOWN OF DEVENTER - MATTHIAS

(1612-20/03/1619)

Matthias is the third son of Maximilian II and Marie, daughter of Charles V. He was born in Vienna on February 24, 1557. To the detriment of Spain, the States General offered him the Netherlands in December 1577, but after the battle of Gembloux, in January 1578, he took refuge in Antwerp before returning to Germany in 1581. His brother Rudolf II being unable to govern, he had Austria assigned to him, then, in 1608, Hungary and Moravia and finally Bohemia in 1611. Having had no children from his union with Anne of Tyrol, he designated as successor his cousin Ferdinand of Styria, the future Ferdinand II. Matthias died in Vienna on March 20, 1619..
