Commentary

Le portrait de cet exemplaire est intermédiaire entre le portrait jeune des premières frappes de tétradrachmes et le portrait âgé et épaissi que l’on retrouve sur les deniers de Rome.
The portrait on this example is intermediate between the young portrait of the first tetradrachm strikes and the old and thickened portrait found on the Roman denarii.

Historical background

NERO

(13/10/54-9/06/68)

The monetary reform of 64 made it possible to restore the finances of the state while making the inhabitants of the Empire bear the cost of these. This year 64 is marked by the great fire of Rome and its consequences, including the persecution against the Christians of the city. The following year, it is the discovery of the conspiracy of Pison, the death of Seneca and Lucain. In 66, Tiridates was enthroned King of Armenia in Rome. Nero then goes to Greece where he performs on stage and proclaims "The freedom of Greece". The excesses of the emperor cause at the beginning of the year 68 a wave of discontent which culminates with the revolt of Vindex in Gaule, Galba and Otho in Spain. Nero is declared a public enemy by the Senate. He committed suicide on June 9 so as not to fall alive into the hands of his enemies..
