Historical background

NÉRON

(10/13/54 to 06/09/68)

August

Nero is certainly one of the most famous emperors through Tacitus and Suetonius, but also one of the most maligned. This is the last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Son of Agrippina, the second wife of Claudius, and Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, who was born in 37. It comes down to time of Augustus by his mother and Julie by his maternal grandfather, Germanicus. After the murder of Agrippina with Claude by using Locust in 54, 17 years old, he began his reign auspiciously. Helped Seneca, his tutor, and Burrus, prefect of the Praetorium, he governs wisely with the Senate. He married Octavia, daughter of Claudius and Messalina. Brother of Octavia, Britannicus, died in mysterious circumstances in 55 AD (poisoned?). After the "quinquennum aureum" (54-59), the emperor is allowed to murder or his mother. The last nine years of his reign will destabilize the principality.
