Historical background

NANTES (aldermen AND MAYORS ...)

The Mayor of Nantes was installed in 1565 after being created by Francis II in 1560, with the right to elect their aldermen. The first strikes tokens are represented by texts from 1569. The first tokens do not carry the name of the mayor, the aldermen are tokens. The second period began in 1631 with the appearance of the name of the mayor on the chips. The arms appear in 1637. It is for this period tokens silver and copper. In the eighteenth century, by cons, most tokens is silver. In 1787, the mayor received 140 tokens of money and each alderman in 70 received a total of 700 annual fees. Several studies have been made on this series: Fornier, in his study of tokens Britain, has identified 100 different chips. Perthuis and Nicollière in 103 count in the Golden Book of the Hotel de Ville de Nantes, Soullard, Let mayors of Nantes, is a total of 135.
