Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire sur un petit flan irrégulier, légèrement échancré à 5 heures au droit et décentré. Très belle tête de Méduse au revers, de haut relief et bien venue à la frappe. Jolie patine de collection ancienne.

Commentary


Au droit, il s’agit plutôt d’une patère que d’un monogramme ou d’un thêta comme le décrivait bien J. Hirsch en 1920 pour le catalogue de la collection Pozzi. Masque saisissant de la Méduse au revers. Un exemplaire similaire (SUP) posé sur l’épi de blé s’est vendu 356€ avec 13 offres dans MONNAIES 38, n° 196.

Parium, located by the sea on the Propontis, at the mouth of the Hellespont between Lampsaque and Priapos, was an important and flourishing port. The city was founded in 710 BC and experienced its greatest period of development in the 4th century BC.
