Commentary

1297 est symboliquement la date de fondation de la Dynastie des Grimaldi de Monaco. En 1297, Francesco (François) Grimaldi du parti Guelfe décide à la tête d’une troupe armée de prendre la forteresse de Monaco tenue par les gênois ralliés au parti des Gibelins. Le 8 janvier 1297, déguisé en moine franciscain, il s’y introduit et ouvre les portes à ses soldats qui s’empare de Monaco.
1297 is symbolically the founding date of the Grimaldi Dynasty of Monaco. In 1297, Francesco (François) Grimaldi of the Guelph party decided, at the head of an armed troop, to take the fortress of Monaco held by the Genoese rallied to the Ghibelline party. On January 8, 1297, disguised as a Franciscan monk, he entered and opened the gates to his soldiers who seized Monaco.
