Commentary

The Imperial British East Africa Company was a trading company founded in 1888 by Scotsman William Mackinnon. Busy with the administration of South Africa, the British government allowed the company to administer and develop East Africa. The company proved incapable of building a railway between Mombasa and Lake Victoria, and especially of managing tensions between the different regional groups. In 1894, the British government formed the East Africa Protectorate, and the company was dissolved in 1895.

Historical background

MOMBASA

(1888-1894)

Between 1888 and 1896, the Imperial British East Africa Company obtained the administration of a coastal strip in East Africa, with Mombasa as its main center and port. The company attempted to annex land towards Lake Victoria but was unable to develop the territory and build its railway. It went bankrupt. Its territory reverted to the British government, which divided it between the Uganda Protectorate and the East Africa Protectorate..
