Obverse description : Buste du Christ de face, la tête coiffée d’un nimbe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colombium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la main gauche.

Reverse description : Buste de Michel VII de face barbu, couronné avec les pendilia, vêtu du loros, tenant de la main droite le labarum bouleté et de la gauche un globe crucigère.

Historical background



Michel succeeded Romanus IV when the latter released by the Turks and returning to Constantinople, was blinded and died of his wound. Part of Asia Minor was lost, Sicily was invaded by the Normans and sedition broke out in the Balkans. Michel was overthrown by a conspiracy in 1078. Filed, he retired to a monastery.
