MEXICO - DICTATORSHIP OF PORFIRIO DIAZ

(1876-1880 and 1884-1911)

After Juàrez's death in 1872, Mexico entered a long period of dictatorship under President Porfirio Diaz. The country made great economic progress thanks to North American capital, but it also worsened social disparities. The number of latifundia increased to the point that in 1910, 95% of the peasants were landless. Having become very unpopular, Diaz was overthrown in 1911 which opened a long period of civil wars.
