Historical background

MENUS-PLAISIRS DU ROI

The full name of this administration is "Silverware, Small Pleasures and Affairs of the King's Chamber". This is the department in charge of theater sets, costumes and accessories for plays, ballets and shows organized at court. It is headed by a steward. From the Hôtel du Roi, the Menus Plaisirs et Affaires de la Chambre service provided the King with the means to appear as a sovereign. The term menus covers the small supplies made by the valets de chambre, barbers and upholsterers, liveries, travel, almanacs and calendars intended for the Court, jewels and portraits offered by the King.
