Obverse description : Tête janiforme excessivement stylisée avec une barre verticale séparant les deux visages.

Reverse

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Reverse description : Cheval à gauche, la crinière perlée. Un aurige stylisé, traité en globules et en segments bouletés. Un croissant pointé entre les pattes et une croisette bouletée devant le poitrail.

Commentary

Ce statère semble être de même coin de revers que l’exemplaire de la collection de Saulcy, vente Cahn 81 du 5 avril 1933, n° 1918 et de mêmes coins de droit et de revers que l’exemplaire BN 8965 (Traité de S. Scheers, n° 297).

MEDIOMATRICI (Area of Metz)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Médiomatriques were a very powerful people of Belgian Gaul. They were strongly Romanized and owed their wealth to the salt trade. They were installed on the Moselle and controlled part of the Vosges and Alsace. They had for neighbors the Treveri, the Remi, the Lingones, the Leuci and the Sequani. They provided a contingent of five thousand men for the relief army intended to free Alesia. Their main oppidum was Divodurum (Metz). Caesar (BG. IV, 10; VII, 75).
