Historical background

MARSEILLE - MASSILIA - CHILDERIC II

(662-675)

Childeric was born around 653. He is the son of Clovis II and the Frankish slave Bathilde. He married in 667 Blitilde, daughter of Princess Himnechilde. The lords of Neustria turned to Childeric to overthrow the mayor of the Ébroïn palace; the latter was locked up in the monastery of Luxeuil while the king of Neustria Thierry III was imprisoned in Saint-Denis. Childeric II abolishes the minting of gold in Gaul in favor of silver coinage. He was assassinated in October/December 675, during a hunting party in the forest of Bondy.
