Historical background

MOROCCO - FRENCH PROTECTORATE

1912-1956

Morocco is opening up to European trade in the late eighteenth century. The country remains divided between the nineteenth century French influence (bombardment of Tangier and Mogador), British and Spanish and became an issue in the rivalry of its powers, auquelles joins Germany in 1905. The Agadir incident 1911 is set through negotiations between France and Germany that accepts the French protectorate over Morocco against a strip of territory in the Congo. Lyautey, Resident General, pacify the country while the High Atlas resists until 1934. Following major works, the country is rapidly converted but France imposes increasing its direct administration regardless of the protectorate. Nationalism ceases to gain ground and the 1940 defeat leading to protests increasingly important.
