Historical background

MOROCCO - ALAOUITES - MULAI ABD-AL AZIZ I

(AH 1311-1326 - 1894-1908)

When Moulay Abdul Aziz I ascended the throne, he faced infighting among the tribes and rising penetration by the great powers. The two main players who found themselves in competition were the French and the Germans. In 1904, France, which wanted to secure the western border of Algeria, agreed with the English and the Spaniards for the sharing of this region. Guillaume II landed in 1905 in Tangier in order to guarantee the independence of the Cherifian state. The international crisis was settled in Algeciras in 1906 and placed Morocco under European control. France nevertheless continued its military penetration of the country and established a protectorate over the Makhzen. In 1909, she signed a convention in which she recognized the economic interests of Germany. The most serious crisis was to break out in 1911 with the intervention of the gunboat Panther in Agadir. The crisis was resolved by territorial compensation between France and Germany in Africa. On March 30, 1912, the French imposed the protectorate on the Sultan.
