MAINE - COUNTY OF MAINE - CHARLES OF VALOIS

(1290-1317)

Charles de Valois (1270-1325) is the son of Philippe III the Bold and Isabella of Aragon. He first married Marguerite d'Anjou (+1299), daughter of Charles II of Naples, then Catherine de Courtenay (+1307), daughter of Philippe, titular emperor of Constantinople, finally Mathilde de Saint-Pol (+1358) . He is the father of Philippe VI of Valois (1293-1350). It was Charles who arranged the marriage of Clemence of Hungary to Louis X le Hutin in 1315. He was lieutenant in Guyenne for his nephew Charles IV after the confiscation of Guyenne in 1324.
