Rare jeton, surtout en argent, frappé pour le frère du Cardinal de Richelieu. On note une faute d’orthographe dans la légende à ELEEMOSINARIVS avec le redoublement du E. Ce titre est toujours utilisé de nos jours dans le cadre restreint de loges maçonniques où il désigne le frère chargé de la bienfaisance, des aumônes et de l’aide aux frères dans la détresse. C’est lui qui détient et gère le “tronc de la veuve”.
Frère aîné d'Armand Jean du Plessis, plus connu sous le nom de Richelieu, Alphonse Louis du Plessis naquit à Paris en 1582. Après avoir été consacré évêque de Luçon, il se démit de sa charge en faveur de son frère et se retira en 1605 chez les Chartreux. Le cardinal de Richelieu le fit nommer archevêque d'Aix-en-Provence puis de Lyon. En 1629, il est nommé cardinal, puis, deux ans plus tard, grand aumônier de France. Il mourut à Lyon en 1653.
Rare token, mostly in silver, struck for the brother of Cardinal Richelieu. There is a spelling error in the legend at ELEEMOSINARIVS with the doubling of the E. This title is still used today in the restricted framework of Masonic lodges where it designates the brother responsible for charity, alms, and assistance to brothers in distress. It is he who holds and manages the “widow's trunk.” The elder brother of Armand Jean du Plessis, better known as Richelieu, Alphonse Louis du Plessis was born in Paris in 1582. After being consecrated Bishop of Luçon, he resigned his office in favor of his brother and retired to the Carthusians in 1605. Cardinal Richelieu had him appointed Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence and then of Lyon. In 1629, he was named Cardinal, then, two years later, Grand Almoner of France. He died in Lyon in 1653
